EXPORT OF MEAT.

THE IMPERIAL GOVERNMENT SCHEME. Wellington, August 18. Six steamers are loading frozen meat in New. Zealand ports at the present time, and four additional steamers will arrive before the end of the month. The quantity of meat in store at the end of July was 1.885,000 freight carcases, but this total has been reduced materially during the last eighteen days. The Prune Minister mentioned to-day that up to August 10 the Government had shipped 108,033 quarters of beef, 1,278,570 'greases of mtuton, and 1,957,033 carcases of lamb to the order of the Imperial authorities. In answer to a question regarding the use made of the meat by the Imperial Government, Mr. Masscy said that the lamb was not used fo'r army purposes. It was sold to the ordinary consumers in the Mother Country, the Board of Trade simply selling it thn.u{.h the usual trade channels. The object of the State's inteivention was to keep down prices. All the beef, and a portion of the mutton, went into ordinary consumption. The scheme had worked smoothly, and, from New Zealand's point of view, profitably.
