A POLICEMAN THIEF.
RAIDS A BUTCHER'S SHOP. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Yesterday. John Henry Howard, a policeman, appeared in the local court this morning to answer charges—(l) Of breaking and entering a butcher's shop with intent to commit a crime; (2) breaking and entering the same shop and committing a crime therein, and (3) that lie did by night wilfully damage a pant! of glass* Sub-inspector Broberg said accused until this morning was a member of the police force of South Dunedin. Recently a series of thefts of meat had been committed at the shop in question. On August 5 the proprietor set a watch, and as the result Howard was suspected. The matter was reported to the Superintendent of Police and another watch set, and shortly after 5 this morning Howard was seen to enter the shop by the back door, using a key. Senior-Sergeant Bart then entered the shop, and Howard dropped a bag containing a leg of mutton and dived through the plateglass window. He admitted the offences. Accused was remanded till the 27th. bail being refused.
