AUROA. (From Our Own Correspondents.) The farewell social held last Meek in honor of our boys going into on;np was a great success, people from tar and near turning out to -diow their appreciation of the sacrifices many of the Ijovs are making to show their loyalty to their dominion. Mr. R. \V. J. McNeil was in the chair, and, in his opening remarks, he told the audience to sing dnm'l) if he happened to tread on nnv of their pet corns, in regard to ruli.'f funds or sending a family to the front. , The ladies of Auroa are maki:U a move in the matter of sewing for vV troops. A meeting was held at Miss Mowbray's on Tuesday last to discuss different suggestions, when there were 17 ladies present. Tile Bachelors, evidently thinking thai leap year is drawing near, decided 1o hold a ball oil August 17th, and their efforts proved an unbounded success,some like 100 couples gracing the floor, which wan in perfect order, as it proved itself to re. according to Professor I'irinigan, when, doing the Highland fling, he found himself putting in an extra full stop, milch to the amusement of the audience. The sit-down supper provided was quite up to the usual standard, and was most favorably eomemnted on. The music was provided by MeCarty'g Orchestra, and was excellent. Tile proceedings from beginning to end were conducted in a most jovial spirit, and onp ventures to *ay that one or two of our bachelors will have 110 need to fear conscription inside of twelve months.
TATAKAIiMAKA. August is with us again, and the time of the calves and lambs has come. Theoretically it is spring, but practically winter still lingers, loath to leave us. with its storaij and earthquakes and hail ami deluges. • Tataraimaka lias been in the throes of spring cleaning lately, embracing the severe handling of gorse fences, etc. The Anglican Church lias been busy "snodding 1 ' up its surroundings, and quite a number of settlers took part in a working bee for that purpose. The ladies turned out on two occasions and provided very enjoyable afternoon teus, which were fully appreciated by their menfolk, who were so busy chopping down pines, cutting and burning branches, etc. Although our hearts are with our bravo boys at the front, our hands must keep to our useful task., Taranaki is still peopled by men and women who can toil, und "toil terribly," and whatsoever iiieir hand findeth to do, do it with their might. Our Jli-w . /jeese factory at the Timnrii is fast approaching completion, and will shortly be. ready to take in milk. We all hope for a good season, so thai we may be able to give (icciy to those nations who are within sound of the, Iftftf*, and not forgetting our own feir-k arid wounded heroes. Our ladies committee desire to return /ou their hcarticxt thanks for so generously giving ns to good an advertisement in the Daily New» for our latest local effort fur our boys; as « result £lO 10s was handed over to the national fund. The Sunday school children, with fine spirit of unselfishness, handed back their prize money, so all takings will be freed to go to this patriotic causa.
