HOW HOSPITALS CAN HELP. The necessity of procuring as girls as possible to train as nurses was touched on) at the meeting of the T#r«naki Hospital and Charitable Aid Boan! yesterday. Mr. M. J. MaclteynohL said that Taranaki could .produce some of the Ibe&t material for furnishing trained nurses that could be found anywhere in New Zealand, and with a view to more nurses Tueing trained by the Board he moved—"ln »rder t« assist in meeting the urgent demand for trained nurses, the Hospital Board increase the number of probationers to the utmost limit of its accommodation." Mr. 1). IfcA'.lum seconded/ i The chairman (Mr. . C. J. Bellringef) said the matter was purely one of accommodation f«r nurses. At presest the accommodation at the hospital wis taxed to its full capacity, and there weie two nurses boarded at a private houlc near the hospital. I Mr. A. H. Halcombe agreed that the. need for trained nurses in New Zetland at present was most urgent. A doctor in one if the hospitals in Emit had written and told liim that his hospital was receiving an average of 2QO wounded soldiers a day from the Dardanelles, and there were not nearly .sufficient nurses to attend to them. r Mr. McAllum said he fully agreed with the idea to take, every probationer available, and he thought that if thefre was not sufficient accommodation at the hospital the Board ehould agree to pay the extra cost of boarding nurses outside. Mrs. DockriH said there were a great many suitable girls in New Plymouth alone who were only too anxious to give their services and die thought tney should all Ibe accepted.
