Dr.H. K. Finch, District Health Oflieer for Wellington, arrived in New Plymouth l),v the mail twin last night on Departmental business. Private C. S. Kelly, formerly a member of the literary staff of the Stratford ICvening Post, is reported as sick, but now convalescent, suffering from enteric fever. At a meeting of th*. Works Ccmmittce of the New Plymouth Borough Council on Monday night, the Mayor extended a welcome to Mr. E. 0. Clayton, the newborough engineer. Private F. .1. IF. Pirani, who has been wounded at the Dardanelles, is (he second son of Mr. F. 'Pirani. Private Pirani was refused admission lo the foivcs in New Zealand, but worked his passage io Kgypt and there joined the Otago" section. He had been three months "in the trenches at. the Dardanelles before he was wounded. Mr. James Swindlehurst, Hawera, has received word from the Minister of Defence, stating that his son, Leslie Swimllehm-st, lias been wounded in the left thigh, and is now on the hospital ship. This is the second son of Mr. Swindlehurst who has been wounded at Hie Dardanelles his son Fred having also been wounded, but is now hack in action. Private Rupert Nieholls, who is in the Davis Street Hospital in Wellington, is progressing favorabfy, despite a very serious operation last week. Visited by a Stratford resident on Sunday lust, he seemed very cheery, and his visitor was deeply impressed by the remarkable fortitude of Nicholls.' He speaks of the Dardanelles operations in which he took part as lightly as if it were all in n day's work. The spirit of the New Zealanders cannot be realised until one has spoken to one of these wounded heroes.
