FINANCING THE WAR. LOANS FROM THE UNITED STATES. Received August 16, 12.5 a.m. New York, August 10. 'The British and French Governments are arranging credits for one hundred million sterling in the United States in order to finance war purchases and counteract the depreciation of sterling exchange. The American press points out that for the first time in its history New York is virtually the world's financial centre.
BULGARIA REFUSES PASSAGE OF MUNITIONS.

Official: Advices from (Bucharest state that a German commercial attache requested the Finance Minister to allow munitions to pass into Bulgaria, and threatened energetic action in the • event of refusal. M. Costinescu refused poinlblank, and the Ministerial Council approved of his reply.

A newly licensed German pilot, wishing to show his prowess to the inhabitants of his native city of Sohlotheim, made an exhibition flight. Tn landing he crashed into the crowd,-.killing fifteen women. ZEPPELINS ACTIVE. Received August 10, 12,5 a.m. ' Petrograd, August 14. Taubes and Zeppelins daily visit Welkin, and many civilians have been killed. PREGNANT PREPARATIONS. VEXEZELOS TO RETURN TO POWER. Received August 10, 12.5 a.m. 'Pari.?, August 1!4. Athens telegrams say that a decree lias been issued calling up the l&lo class to the colors. M. Venezelos has had a lengthy audience with the King. Amsterdam, August 14. The Tiigeblatt's Athens correspondent says that the King, after opening the Chamber and accepting the Cabinet resignations, will certainly ask M. Venezolos whether he Li ready to form a Cabinet on the principle of strictest neutrality.
ON THE DANUBE'S BANKS. AUSTRIAN REPORT. Received August I'd, 12.5 a.m. Nish, August 14. Official: Our infantry and artillery on Monday defeated the enemy's attempt to strengthen themselves at certain points on the left bank of the Save ami the Danube. Our artillery on 'Monday night effectively attacked supply columns between Bercherova, and Orcliava, and in the vicinity of Solokavatz. The enemy on the same night opened a vSolent infantry and artillery fire on our positions at Dognjhnlanovatz, hut our artillery promptly, silenced him. The enemy on 'Tuesday attempted to land on the right bank of'the Danube near Golubac. They were allowed to get within fifteen yards of the shore, and we then opened a sustained fire.
SUBMARINES SUNK. A CHASE IN THE ADRIATIC. Received August 111, 12.5 a.m. Rome, Auguwt 14. Advices from Salonica state that a German submarine was mined and sunlk in the Sea of Marmora. The U.'S, on Thursday 'morning, attacked an auxiliary cruiser that was patrolling in the Adriatic. A quick manoeuvre enabled the cruiser to escape two torpedoes, and the cruiser rammed and damaged the submarine. Italian destroyers, with the French destroyer Bisson, were sent in pursuit, and the Bisson, on Friday, discovered, bombarded and sank the submarine, taking the crew prisoner.
AVIATIK. ADRIFT. PICKED UP IN THE CHANNEL. Received August 15, 5.5 p.m. Paris, August 14. An English traveller reports that an Aviatik has been picked up in the Channel, a short distance from Folkestone. The machine was intact,.but the motor had disappeared. A GOOD RESULT. TWO ENEMY AIRSHIPS DESTROYED. Received August 15, 5.5 p.m. Rotterdam, August 14. Allied aeroplanes bombed and destroyed two airships near Ghent, and aNn an aeroplane. NO TAXIS. Received August 10, 12.5 a.m. Amsterdam, August 14. Gasolene is exhausted in Vienna, and taxicabs have ceased running. ANTI-WA.R OONGKJ&SS MOOTED. Received August 10, 12.5 a.m. Amsterdam, August 14. The Netherlands Anti-war Council has asked the Foreign Minister to coHaiborate in the the formation of a conference of neutral Powers to sit throughout the war, to work in the interests of peace. The Council hma Issued a warm appeal exhorting the belligerent peopJes to proclaim their desire for peace. The Council says: "You, won't Ibe expected to live up to the admonition of *k>ve your enemy, or your neighbor.' All,,tihat is necessary is to 'respect your neighbor like thyself."* '■'• V
