The necessity of replacing the turf does not appear to have strongly impressed itself upon some members of the New Plymouth club, for every match day sees a unmber of scars on the green which a little trouble would overcome. Players should remember that one of the greatest factors contributing to bad lies is carelessness in replacing turf, and it they are careful in this respect good lies will 'be provided.

At the Witiora golf house on Thursday presentations were made to the members of the club who are leaving for the front in the next reinforcements. About fifty members were present, and Mr. Medley, on behalf of Mr. Elliott (the captain of the club), who was unavoidably absent, made the presentations. In the course of his remarks he said that while they were proud that so many (members of the club had responded to the call of the nation, they greatly regretted the loss of their members, who had been pleasant companions and good .golfers. Some of the members leaving for the front had shown wonderful aptitude for the game, having consideration for the time that they had been playing, and no doubt existed in his mind that they would show that they •had the same ability at the front. The fmal of the Auckland Ladies' Rolf Club championship was; played at M.iddlemoro during the week in ideal golfin« conditions. The course, was in good' playing order. It is many years since the championship was confined to club members, but owing to the war it was not considered advisable to hold an open championship tournament this year. Tho contestants were Miss Gwen Gorrip, and Miss Muriel Alison. The first hole was brilliantly won by Miss Alison in four, and tho crowd which was following anticipated that the match would be keenly contested. Such, however, proved not to be the case, foir MUs Alison did •not win another hole till the seventh, where the game stood 2 up in Miss Gor. rie's favor. The eighth hole was won by Miss florrie in four, and the ninth in a well-played five, the outward round •having ia.kon her 40. Miss florrie was ■I up at the turn. The tenth hole was halved in four, and the eleventh went to Miss fiorrie with a perfect four—s up. The twelfth was halved in five, and the. thirteenth saw the end of the, game, (or Miss Alison sliced her drive aiul had to lift from a tree-guard, and was not on the green until she had plavcd folic. Miss (iorrie got away a fine drive and readied the green with a nice ueishie shot, and, taking two puts, won the hole and the match—fl up and 5 to plav. Th*s ■was the fifth time Miss Gorrie had won the chamiponship at Middlemore. The winner played good, steady golf, and though she missed several "chances she made no bad mista.kos.
