Bcngc, of the New Zealand Garrison Artillery, and late of the City Council's treasury department, wishes to 3 thank the donor of a gift, which he 0 discovered in a secret pocket attached to a shirt. "Amongst my kit," he says, 1 r 'l carried a shirt which was issued to 3 rac at Palmerston North, Now Zealand. .. This shirt waa very thick and warm, a and having a couple of other shirts, I decided to keep this one imtil I arrived in a colder olijmate, when it would he more appreciated. It was not until we arrived at Lemnos that I used the j, shirt, and after wearing it for a week I derided to give it a bath." Looking r, inside, I discovered a secret pocket, on [. was written, 'Khandallati mascot.' Upon further investigation, I Became rl aware that the .pocket contained money s and paper. Hv find was oxcitcdh an- ; nonnced to sonic mates near by, and a s crowd sooff gathered. On cutting the :- pocket open I first drew out a, piece of s cardboard, with 'lvhandallall, N.Z.; good luck,' thereon, and then pushed out a coin, a shilling turned brown with age, or, shall I say, with blushes at being 'brought to account after its nine montfe' captivity. lam sure the kind lady will appreciate, as greatly as myself, the incidents connected witli her gift. I still have the mascot, and hope to arrive back safe in New Zealand with it after the war." 7 Gunner Bcngc was reported yesterday to have arrived in London.
