The vessel loaded at 'the Hornport under charter to the Federal-Shire -me lor Auckland, Wellington, Lvttelton. and Dune-din, ami sailed on Jur,- I After leaving Durban the Waimate ran into heavy gales; seas which broke on bonnl carried away deck lilting, smashed in deck cabin doors, and completely wrecked the oliicers' and crew's ipiarlr-vs and the dining saloon. ]„ addition (~ this damage, (he seas carried awav in,lilalurs, and broke or twisted all sleam pipe casings and pipes on the deck-, wiiilc the starboard rails were broken and everything movable was swept overboard. One great wall of water wl,i ( .|, broke over the ship battered (he carpenter's shop io pieces, and .swept the remains over the side. Another sea broke over ihe high bridge, and (he wafburst into X„. :: hatch. Large ipianl.ilies oi water found their way into the hold. and it is feared that a iarge portion of the cargo has been badly damaged. The weather gradually improved, nnd as the Witinmte had run short of b„.il;er coal a call was made at Hobart to obtain supplies. An examination of No. 3 hold of i],,.\ sieamer Waimate shows that a lapv' mimber of cases are pretty well ml.uvuted with sea water. The cargo in this hold is:—Hs Urns I'm- Auckland, s:)2 lor ; Wellington, 7 for LvllcHuii, and (Ml foi 1 Diuiedin, Probably the Ibmedin cargo suffered most. There will he no ..cnvral average, the damage being held >'■'. crone ' under the --[.pril« of the sea" on the bill I of lading.
