FRUITGROWERS' ASSOCIATION
VARIOUS DEPUTATIONS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington. Saturday. A deputation from the Fruitgrowers' Association wailed on Hie Public Service Commissioner and the Minister of Kailways to-day and expressed perturbation at the numlber of inspector-instructors who had left the service on account of more tempting offers. One speaker suggested that two expert instructors he appointed at £SOO a year each, rather than foiu' at C-HH) cadi. The need for expert lectures was also urged. Mi>. Tviggs. of the Public Service Commission, said he would like to see one or two of the .smartest men brought, from California, and in addition that some of the most aible Sew Zealand instructors of the ■Department should go to America to gain further experience and information. 'Mr. Triggs' view met with the approval of the deputation. It was decided to wait on the new Minister, to urge the carrying out of the suggestion. The deputation then waited on the Hon. W. IT. ITerrins to ask that railway charges on sprays and Kew Zealand tinned fruits and jams, he reduced. Attention was also drawn (o careless handling and pillaging of fruit. Mr. Herries said that, regarding freight, it would entirely depend on the tariff revision at present in hand. lie would issue instnietioiLs that more care must he used in handling fruit, and, a.s to pillaging. it. was desirable that instances be reported to the Department st once. The shortage of trucks would be attended to as soon as possible.
