STRATFORD.

"CINDERELLA," (From Our Own Correspondent,.) Fortunately we have a real good lire brigade, but they are sorely in need of a motor engine to enable them to reach any fire in sueli a large borough as Stratford quickly. .It was in order to raise funds for this object that the pantomime, of "Cinderella'' was staged last night, and the public sljowed' their appreciation of the efforts of the brigade, by staying away; further, half of the net proceeds were to be given to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. This alone should hare ensured a full house. It was certainly disheartening to the performers to play before such a poor house. As to the performance itself, those who were present were loud in their praises of it. There were defects, but these will always appear; after all, they were only minor, and did not detract from the evening's enjoyment. The cast of characters on the whole was well chosen, Miss Evelyn Moon, as "Cinderella," certainly standing out as the best performer, and she thoroughly deserved the hearty applause given her. Her song, "The Land of Some Day," was nicely sung. Miss Hazel Wolfe (Prince Amour) was easily the best singer. The solo, "I'll Never Miss Another Girl as I Miss You," was the gem of the evening, and she deserved the recall. Mr. Stanley Davis, as Lord Easygoing, was, quite at homo in his part, and his acting and comic songs were loudly applauded. The dancing was really good, and reflected great credit on the teacher, Mrs. Mcßeth, to whom much praise is due for the success in training the children. In the "Ballet de Fairies" Miss Isabel Kirkwood (Queen of the Fairies) danced gracefully, and well deserved the position allotted her, while Pat. Child", a little toddler of Ihree years of age, who took the part of Ciipid, seemed to enjoy the fun, and kept the audience in good humor.

The ''March of the Allies," in which performers represented eaeh nation fighlhig for the Allies and wore national colors, was easily the best of the rvening. Every member of the company did his or her best in their respective parts. ALLEGED BRUTAL ASSAULT. On Wednesday night a man named Russell was found lying unconscious in the gutter in Broadway, with liis head cut open and bleeding profusely. He w;is immediately removed to the hospital, and regained consciousness yesterday morning. It has since been discovered that he was the victim of an alleged brutal assault. The police have the matter in hand, and further developments are expected shortly. GENERAL. Custodian A. E. Burgess was ihe winner of Lieutenant Davey's Trophy at the local fire brigade's competition held ■ yesterday afternoon. As this is (lie second occasion he has won this trophy it now becomes his property. A breeze took place' in the Magistrate's Court this morning between Mr. Macalister and the Clerk" of the Court, , it was alleged that the Clerk of the I Court refused to let Mr. Maealister's , clerk deliver a summons. Mr. Macalister ; . contended that any solicitor. i>r clerk of any solicitor, had the right to issue , a summons privately. This, tlie Clerk 1 said, was wrong, as ihe reading of ihe subsection of the Magistrate's Court Act ,' would show. Mr. Macalister snid that in anv other town the solicitor or his clerk was always allowed to serve ihe . summons. The Magistrate agreed with I- Mr. -Maca lister's contention, and Ui» , I matter ended.
