The Chief Justice;, delivering judgment, said that counsel for applicant had asked leave to withdraw the application. This could not be granted, but the application was dismissed, with £2l costs, his Honor remarking Cut statements in the ullidavits tiled by At--1 kinsun, as solicitor for applicant, together with llioae tiled by the Law Society, disclosed mutters that, in his opinion, required serious attention by the Law (Society. MERCURY DEPOSITS. Thames, TTednesday. A mercury deposit near Thames is now being prospected. High-grade ore was secured and forwarded to Sydney and America. Experts from Australia and Mexico who examined the deposit are greatly impressed with its possibilities. Since thii war the price of mercury has increased from t'7 10s per 7alb bottle to £lB per bottle. ALLECED ARSOX. l)ui".!din. Wednesday. At Cromwell to-day .las. Kirk-man, alias das. Turner, was charged with wilfully destroying a two-roomed hut at Waitiere, which was destroyed by fire on July 2<i, and also with threatening to destroy by fire the Victoria Bridge Hotel. Accused was committed for trial at Dunedin. BOOKMAKER FIXED. DuneJiu, Wednesday. Tn the Police Court this morning Mr. Widdowson, S.M.', fined Frederick Matthews, a bookmaker, for betting 'in licensed premises (the Grand Hotel) .€2O and costs. ATTEIIPTEN SUICIDE. Ohistchur. hj, Wednesday. Following proceedings for maintenance against him by his wife, Charles Clark, a resident oj Xew Brighton, attempted suicide yesterday, and was removed to the hospital unconscious, but is now recovering. A TROOPER'S ILLNESS. Dannevirke, Wednesday. As the express train passed through Dannevirke yesterday a trooper named Private Robinson, on leave from Waikanae training camp, going to Oisborne, had to be taken from it and admitted to the Dannevirke hospital, where he was found to be suffering from cerebri) [ spinal meningitis. The Health Department has issued instructions for the iso- ' lation of contacts, and steps arc lieing taken to prevent the spread of thr disease. The invalid's condition is said to be very serious.
PIT.LICAX FIXED. Inwrcargill, Wednesday. A very unusual ease—and the first of its kind'lieard in Southland—'was before Mr. Hutchinson. S.M., to-day. when Arthur M. W. I.aik, an hotelkeoper. was charged with having under his control, on dime 2(1, a bottle with a la.be! a.llixed thereon, and without destroying such label, making use of the bottle for the purpose of bottling liquor (whisky) for sale, contrary to section 210 of the Lileusing Act. The analyst's report showed that, the liquor was found to be of the standard required bv the Sale of Food and Drugs Act. but the liquor from a similar unopened bottle contained less caramel than was contained in the whisky from the opened bottle. His Worship pointed out that the maximum penalty was C2OO. and imposed the minimum fine of £2O.
