CIVIL SERVICE BALL.

A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION, Last night :\ lot of genuine joy was thrown into the winter season, when thi! Civil Servants of New Plymouth held a most successful plain and fancydress hall at the Coronation Hall, the object of which was to help the fund for sick and wounded New Zealanders, and the large e roml testified to the extent to which the soldiers would benotlt from the. function. last ulght'.-i function was only, another phase in the round of useful activities which the service lias shown sinoe the war 'broke out. The number of men from the service who jiave enlisted comprises a laTge contingent. It is therefore pleasing to record that last night's ball was one of the most successful functions ever held at New Plymouth. The floor was in excellent order for dancing, which was keenly enjoyed by the large number which took part in the pastime, and the music added still more to the pleasure of the evening. For non-dancers there were bridge and euchre, and the devotees of cards were present in strong- force. The supper arrangements .were ample and excellent. No function would he complete in these days without auctions, and a good sum of money was realised by this means. All concerned deserve great praise for the signal success achieved, (but the work of Miss B. C. Gideon, the secretary, merits special commendation. The members of the General committee were: Messrs. F, Tj. ftossiter (chairman), A. J. Rossiter, L. Smith, W. Ainsworth, G. Gilbert, H. J. Moverley, Dinniss. Mead, White and Anfold. The Ladies' Committee consised of Misses Warren, Hammond, Grcatbatch, Putt and Gideon (secretary). The Supper Committee was composed of Alesdames Dockrill.. Hossitter. Eyre, Bullaid, Arnold, Honeyfield, Surtcvanl, Crutch and Fookcs. The decorations were arranged by member, of the local Defence Office, assisted by Messrs. Moverley, Dinniss and Gilbert. The table decorations wero in the hands of Mrs. Cooke and Mrs. IT. V.. Fookcs. Many other officials of the Civil Service assisted. The winner of the sideboard was Mr 0. H. Drew (No. 88).
