OFFICER OF JIUNITIONS. Received August 4, 9 p.m. London, August 4. Mr.' Lloyd George has temporarily appointed Sir Frederick Black as DirectorGeneral of Munitions. FACTORY EXPLOSION. Received August 4, 5.5 p.m. , London, August 4. Two further deaths have occurred as a result of the fire at Nabel's explosives factory at Ardeer (Ayrshire). Thirtynine people were injured. Considerable damage was done, but the manufacture of cordite lias not been seriously affected. The cause has not yet been ascertained. ' COMFORT FOR THE TROOPS. Received August 4, 10.30 p.m. London, August 4. The War Office has decided to discontinue puttees, owing to the result of last winter's campaign, when the putlee wa3 found to be little protection against mud and water, and actuallyled to great suffering. A large order has been given for Russian military boots, which will be supplied to the troops before the winter. KILLED IN ACTION. Reeeivcd August 5, 12.25 a.m. London, August 4. Lord Desborougii's second son, Gerald, has been killed in Flanders while leading a charge upon some machine-guns. His brother's death was cabled 011 Slav 2S.
