TRENTHAM ENQUIRY.
COMMENTS BY THE CHAIRMAN. By Telegraph.—Press Association/ Wellington, Last Night. Belore the hearing of evidence was commenced to-day, his Honor, addressing the Solicitor-General, said: "I notice bv a report in a newspaper laet night that the erection of hutments it proceeding at Trentham. This is a matter which, as you know, was refer* red to this commission. Proceeding to complete the balance of the huts, without waiting for the decision of the commission, would appear to indicate that there is no occasion for this commission to proceed with the inquiry. If that it the position, this commission should have been informed earlier that it waa intended to take no notice of its findings."
The Solicitor-General said tnat ne had no infoi'muliou, beyond that in the newspaper, that the erection of the huts was proceeding. He could, however, give the Commission of Inquiry the assurance that its function had not in any way heen altered or restricted. So far as he knew, its findings in respert to the hutments would probably be gfven eflect to. He would make inquiries. ■ The hearing of evidence was then proceeded with.
