THE RUSSIAN RETREAT. CONTINUOUS SANGUINARY FIGHTING. Received August 3, 10 p.m. Petrograd, August 3. A communique states: We raptured 500 prisoners and si'.' machine-guns east of Pontevsk. Tli;e enemy progressed on the right 'bank ol the Narew, after several days' stubborn fighting. The enemy have concentrated very large forces in Rozani, and attacked' in the direction of the railway south of iljtroler.ka, where an extremely desperate and sanguinary battle continues. The action on the Vistula, north-west of ■ j.'lounie and south of Garaklovja, terminated in our favor. iWe withdrew to a more concentrated position near the Ivangorod crossing, after a stubborn engagement. Our troops on fit® certer m the left of the Bug occupied a wrV ;:o»l unmolested. MITAU OCCUPIED. TOWN UNDAMAGED. Received August 3, 5.5 p.m. Amsterdam, August 2. A German communique status: Our troops, after some fighting, occupied Mitau, and the town, on the whole, is undamaged* , (Mitau is a town of .3fi,OQQ inhabitant?, 20 miles south-west of Riga.) 1 " RUSHING FROM FRANCE. GERMAN REINFORCEMENTS. Petrograd, August 2. Official: Large German reinforcements from the French to the Russian front began in the fourth week of July, when General Mackensen's army was severely hustled in the Wieprz Valley atid in the battles on the Narew, which were long drawn out. This creates favorable conditions for the Allies' operations in the west.
The batteries at Novoe Droevisk dismounted two German guns on motor carriages and foiled repeated attempts to remove them.
GERMAN REPORT. IN PURSUIT OF THE RUSSIANS. Received August 3, 5.5 p.m. Amsterdam, August 2. A Gorman communique states: —We stormed Height 180, north-cast of Suwalki, and our troops north-west of Lotr.za reached the Nnrcw, nfter nn obstinate resistance. We took 1000 prisoners. AVo are advancing on tlie remainder of the Vistula front, anil have taken prisoner 580. The situation hefore Warsaw is unchanged. In the fcouth-oastern theatre our troops, under General von Wovrsch, advanced, amid heavy fighting, through a good district eastwards of Podzaneze, and enplurcd fifteen hundred prisoners and eight ma-chine-guns. The Ait.itrians are closing round Ivangorod, and the Russians are still engaging von Mrekensen. We gained a stiecesa ea«t of Kurow, taking prisoner CM. The pursuit of the enemy north-east of Cholm continues. ' The Aiwtri.ms are across the Bug south-west of Wlaimir\voh|nski. AT IVANGOROD. COMPLETING ITS INVESTMENT. Received August 4, 1*2.10 p.m. Vienna, August 3. Official: West of Ivangorod our Transylvnnian regiments took, at the point oi the bayonet, eight vantage points built one above the other. The semicircle around Ivangorod is becoming considerably narrower, and we have captured over two thousand men and forty guns. Austrian infantry stormed the railway .station at Novo Alexandra, and tile Germans penetrated the third line at Kuroiv. Our troops which crossed t!ic Bug between SoUal and Krylgw are advancing on Wolvnsky.
