He pictured the Australians in Constantinople helping- to pull down the hand of the oppressor and ] unfurling the standard of the cross. The meeting resolved that the time had arrived when every fit man of military age, unencumbered by family) ties or not directly engaged in the production of warlike supplies, should enlist. Recruiting sermons were preached in the churches. Jlr. liolman, reluctantly referring to his reception at the Stadium, said he was not particularly inclined to condone the affair. A regrettable disturbance preceded the departure of a troopship owing to the refusal of leave. Several soldiers left the ship and endeavored to break through the pier guard. In the struggle three men were injured. Tile following day the demand for leave was more insistent. Mr Pearce addressed the men, stating that if they did not return to duty at the appointed time they would not be allowed to proceed. Every man mustered and the ship departed.
