BRIBING ITALIAN SOCIALISTS.

Rome, August 2. Socialists admit the truth of the sensational announcement in Talis newspapers that Germany offered a bribe of several million francs with a view to securing the neutrality of the Italian Socialist party. The intrigue was eonducted by Germanophile Americans. . ON CARSO PLATEAU. THE ITALIANS' BRAVERY. Received August 2, C.45 p.m. Rome, August 1. The Austrians have taken up a second line of defence east of t!radisca and Monfaleone. The Italians are now able to continue the ascent of Carso plateau, supported by artillery placed on Monte Seilbasi and Monte Sant Michel. The latest Austrian losses have been enormous.

Zurich, August 1. Despatches published in Vienna testify to the tenacity and bravery of the Italians during the attack on the Tson/o front, extending to Rubbia on the seacoast. The second battle lasted from July 18 to 25.

Milan, August 2. The Italians have further progressed, chiefly at Carso. The Austrian counterattacks are subsiding, and the enemy are busy preparing trenches to the rearward of their abandoned positions. They appear determined to make a fresh stand upon activities eastward of Vallone. Prisoners pay a tribute to Italian bravery, and declare that the attacks ol the last fortnight were more violent than anything seen at Tarnow. CONTINUED PROGRESS. ITALIAN COMMANDER'S REPORT. Rome, August 1. General Cadorna reports that the Austrian attacks in the Camonica Valley, Carnia, were repulsed. The bold .offensive of the Italian infantry' in the Palpicolo zone resulted in the capture of a strong line of Austrian trenches. The Austrians were reinforced in the evening and counter-attacked, but were driven back with grave losses. The .operations on the Isonzo for the extension of the Flava bridgehead have been successfully developed, after destroying an extensive entanglement which was re-enlarged after our occupation southeast along the slopes of Mount Kuk and in the neighborhood of Zagnra. Our troops iu the Carso are advancing on the second Austrian line, and have made appreciable progress in the centre, ■where they have captured an entrenchment and taken ;i34 prisoners. AT TRIESTE. AUSTRIAN EVACUATION BEGUN. Rome, August 1. Emigrants from Trieste state that the evacuation of the town has begun. Several military establishments anil the ,naval yard have been abandoned and all machinery sent to the interior.
