TARIKL There were large congregations, both morning and evening, at the Anglican Church on Sunday last, when memorial service? were held. The liev. .Keinpthonie officiated, and. in the course of his addvess, referred to tile sorrow that the news of the death of -.Mr. William Jake* had occasioned. Mr. Jakes, who was a member of the First Expeditionary Force, was well known and highly respected here, where lie was bom and lived most, of bis life, lie has given his life, and bis name will be. honored for nit time in Tariki, where no doubt, in due course, a suitable memorial will be erected to bis memory. Deep sympathy is felt for bis parents, who are now living in Xew 'Plymouth, ami also tor his other relatives in this locality in their great loss. A patriotic, social and dance were hrld in the local school-house on July ".ft, and served the dual purpose of raisin'.' funds for our boys, and also bidding farewell to some of our most highly esteemed residents—namely, .AJr. and Airs. Orchard and family, who are removing to another part of the district. D;iring the evening, .Mrs. Urittaiu contributed two splendidly rendered patriotic songs, for which she was vociferously* encored. Mrs. Lnmaden also contributed the appropriate ami pathetic old Scotch song, " Wuil ye no come back againi" To have such talent residing in our wee community, whose only reward, so iV.r as the outer world is concerned, is the joy of doing kindnesses, forcibly reminds one of Iho words of the poet, when he says: ''Full many a (lower is br rn to blush un-ocn and wa-te its s'veetne-s on (lie desert air." Air. Luke also contributed a. recitation in his u.Mial dramatic style, of which it i< to say: '• tt went." After oipper bad been handed round. 011 behalf of the resident-:, Mr. Luke presented Mr. and Mrs. Orchard with a >et. oi silref-mounted careers and tray. Mr. Orchard, in returning thanks on bcliab of him-clf, Mrs. O'chard and family, a free invitation to all to Visit them in their new home, where a w.iini welcome would, ever await all old friends from Waiongona. After the presentation, the youth and beauty of Waiongona and neighborhood chased the fleeting hours on flying feet t!ic enjoyment of all.
