THE SPIDER AND THE FLY. GICANTrc BATTLE RACING. AN EPOCH IN THE WAR. COUNTLESS PILES OF DEAD. Received July 30, 12.40 a.m. Petrograd, Julv 29. Every Russian corps has a separate story of heroism. Every position the i.ermans take represents losses to them «t appalling magnitude, and each success means that the ground is piled with their countless dead. The Germans, though still attacking with deiermtnation and fury, are in an advanced state of exhaustion. Each day sees them reinforced with new ammunition and guns.

The Allies should realise that the •Russians are making- everv effort humanly possible to break the German offensive, and are bleeding the enemy as lie has never been bled before. Each retreat strengthens the Russians and weakens the Germans.

The Morning Post Petrograd correspondent says that the Russians are dealing with the northern and southern .attacks in very different methods. The south is the scene of hard fighting, inch by inch. The Germans make no general progress, but seem to make prolonged pauses to bring up the backward portion of the line b v rushing reinforcements place to place. The are thus constantly under a strain, in tropical heat. The Russians are not yet severely strained, and deal with the. attacks with the troops on the spot. The Germans north of Gruisieczow are still two tparches behind their proper position, owing to successful Russian counter-attacks.

Operations on the Narew front arc ►more advanced. The Germans have hitherto concentrated the principle of exhaustion in this region, and steadily brought up increasing forces since the beginning of; the week, putting forth their utmost efforts to follow up their supposed advantage in crossing the Narew.

The Russians astride the Xarew arc preventing the enemy utilising their success, by direct counter-attacks, and also by harrying the flank in the rear. ' HeWic fighting proceeds in the forest opposite Koshan. The soil on the left ■hank of the Narew in this quarter is good. Firm roads and many tracks traverse the -forest, which is four miles deep. A series of hills at the rear {rives Admirable artillery positions. The Russians are checking the Gorman advance in the forest. The Germans' difficulties will really begin when they emerge. It is still impossible to say at which front the decisive moment will first arrive. The development depends more on the Russians than the Germans. The position is that the Germans are shaking a Utis-iau \vel> on two-thirds of its circumference, while the spider sits watching progress, awaiting the decisive moment with unbreathed- forces.
