Trooper John C'arville Mimro, who died at Trentham last, week, was ,the son of Mr. Alex. Mimro, one of the earliest settlers of Palmerston North. Trooper Mimro' was.a Palmerston boy, born there. Ih'rty-seven years ago, and educated there also. With, his ; parents, he took up fanning in many years aj:o, and had resided in that district ever'since. He left a wife and one child.
Captain Victor L. A. Campbell, R.N., wliu was in charge of the the northern party of Captain Scott's Antarctic Expedition. is in command of the Drake I'attailon of the Royal Naval Division at the Dardanelles, lie was present at the. defence of Antwerp and was amongst those members of tlie Royal Naval Divisiou interned m Holland, but subsci|ueiitly .succeeded in l-eacnmg Engtend. A recent Admiralty announcement states that he has been promoted captain, and lias been made a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order in recognition of liis services at the Dardanelles.
A very pleasant evening was spent at \ ogeltown on Monday, when a lairge oirele of friends gathered for the »purpo«! of bidd-mg good-iby to Mrs. Salt, who is leaving the district, to take -up her residence in Dunedin. Progressive eiii'hre wis played until 10.30, the games being ikeonly contested. The winners were 'Miss Doyle and Mr. Bolton. After cards, supper was partaken of and a toast liist hono-red. Tlie health of Mre. Salt was proposed toy Mr. Webber, n.nd emphasised by Mrs. Gilbert and Mir. Bolton. Mr. Gordon Sale re,ftlied. Mr. Olds made a presentation on ietoalr of the gathering, and,.Mrs. Skit, in acknowledging tho" gift, thanked her friends and sfl-id that it would revive memories of the many friends with whom fflio had spent so -many ha/ppy hours. The singing of Anld Lang Syne eon.'hided a, pleasant little gathering.
