The afternoon tea in aid of, the Wounded Soldiers' Fund, held last sale day jn. tho hall, and provided by Mesdaines Wright, Willcox, Ward and .Miss Dew, was well .patronised by the public/ and £5 7s fid was taken at the door. The dance held in the evening brought the takings tip to ■something like ,C 8 10s, after expenses were paid. Next sale day Mrs. A. Phillips, Airs. Foley and Misses Willcox and Morrow, are providing the refreshments. I The ball held in aid of the Soldiers' Furtd on Wednesday night was a great disappointment, as far as the attendance was concerned. It being so wet, .few turned out, and the floor being damp was very hard to dance upon. Tickets laid and xlobr takings amounted to al)oUjK.£2,">. Mr. ,T. B. Knowles was at the piano, and Misses Cross (violin) assisted. This music was very much appreciated and was given gratis. Mr. Wiley, from Xew Plymouth, piaved the cornet, and helped to liven things up a good deal. Mr. W. Rothery made an efficient .M.C. .After the supper waa handed around Mr. W. It. Wright, on i behalf of the residents of the place, in ! ; a neat, little speech, bid God-speed, good luck and a safe return to Private Frank Hannan, who is at present here on furlough, saying good-toy to his friends before leaving for the front. Three ringing cheers were then given for Private Hannan, the audience singing " For lie's a Jolly flood Fellow," and three cheers were given for the men. The committee is to be congratulated on the effort it made to make the all'air a success, and as expenses were so. light there should be a, very fine surplus. The highest floods ever known in the district were experienced here on Wednesday night. Xearlv everyone leaving the hall after the tall had to wade kneedeep on the' main, road' in. gome places.
