At the Publie Service Associates, gathering to-night relerence was made lo the question of l!ie association being given ii legal status. Dr. Fitchctt commended the good work the association was doing, and urged that it s.iould be given legal recognition. Sir Francis J'.eil said he had neu;r found the association unrca-onablc, and lie had been perhaps more, c:nsely associated witn. it than any other .Minister, It was doing a publie service to the wilole community. Sir Joseph Ward said he would help the association lo get a legal status. He remarked that >ir Francis Hull had not actually proclaimed that the present Government would do this, but be had gone next door to it. Sir Joseph Ward staid lie bad found that giving members of the public service power to regulate their own atlairs never did any barm. MOUF. MEN" MOVEMENT. Wellington, YcHerday. A deputation of the Patriotic Society and Wellington citizen.;, about twenty in number and including the Mayoivwas to have waited on the Minister of' Defence (Mr. Allen) to-day to urge the. (lovernment to send more men to the front and inaugurate a scheme for national registration, but, owing to the late sitting of the House of Representatives .Mr. Allen was unable to be present and the. deputation was postponed until Monday. Subsequently members of the deputation held a meeting in the Parliamentary buildings, and the opinion was expressed that New /Oealand was not doing her share. Mr. S. A. Atkinson said that Earl Kitchener wanted ever/ man he could get, and Mr, It. F. von llaast urged that more use should be made of the. National Reserve. The hope was expressed that the meeting would mean the beginning of a great national war movement throughout New Zealand. A committee was appointed to frame resolutions and generally to organise Mmiday'a deputation. KANCiIOTU CAMP. Pnlmerston N., Yesterday. The bad weather has had very little effect on the camping grounds at Kangiotu, which are in good condition. Arrangements have, been made for the removal of the camp to a permanent site half a mile away. The measles epidemic has gradually subsided, and the quarantine has been lifted to-day. There are "•> )>ntients in the hospital, of whom 20 were discharged to-day and taken to the convalescent camp at the racecourse.
FLOODS AT TE KITH. To Kniti, Yesterday. The heavy rain caused tlie .Mangaokewu river to rise and flood the level portions of the town. The racecourse is several feet under water, it ml the railway between Te Kuiti and Otorohanga is submerged and traffic held up. There was a slip on the line at the same place last week, causing great trouble. The rain has now ceased, and if there is no further fall the line should be clear to-morrow. Tl'MAßl' 11AKBOR HOARD. Timaru, Last Xjght. The chairman of the Harbor Hoard to-day announced that debentures for renewal of loans falling due next year, of a total of £'»;i2,ooo, had been taken up in the dominion at fl per cent, at par. The board managed the business itself, saved brokerage, etc., and gained a few hundred pounds over expenses from premium;. An earlier loan was renewed last year at o per cent. The ■chairman remarked that the promptitude shown in taking up debentures was evidence of the investors' faith in the resources of South Canterbury/, and the board was freed from anxiety regarding the loan for the next twenty years, ADULTERATION" Or MILK.
