Sir,- T extend my heartfelt thank* and gratitude to those inhabitants of Tariki district who so generously awarded me one of them there magnificent. and precious iron .to-s< - for bravery in the trench at Waipnkn 011 the night. of .Tine n. It is very seldom that braverv such as 1 displayed on tliat memorable occasion is rewarded in so liandsoiue and thoughtful a manner and with such goodwill. Upon the receipt of this lovely and artistic token (which I shall wear on my watch chain in memory of the thoughtfillness and appreciation of tho~>e many friends whom I invited to spend a quiet social with me at the Xew Plymouth Court llall) my breast expanded about 7inches with pride and glory, for it does feel nice to be a hero anl know that the eyes of the world are turned towards one in love and: admit.ition, and 1 shall not be satisfied until T have again visited Waipnkn and won my Victoria Cross.'
