HERD TESTIS
Herd testing is not being taken advantage of to t!n> extent one would expeet in Taranaki (says tlio ITawera Mar). One of tlie largest factories— Kauipokonui—has had rather a disappointing experience, although every facility is there offered to suppliers.' Onlv about 3000 out of 11,000 or 12,000 cows are being tested. It seems rather re-markaibl-e. that so many dnir* fanners take so little trot/Me to find otit the real value of the eows thoy are grazing, especially as land is becoming so expensive. There canne under our notice the other day some figures that arc worth publishing, be'caiist? tliey demonstrate what a large margin of loss there is- between a good herd of cows on a well-fanned section, and an indiJl'erent herd oil land .which is indifferently farmed. The three farms ■wluk-li are'quoted below are adjoining properties situated in one. of the best portions of Taranaki, with nothing separating .them except the hedge* and a road, and, so far as one coul4 judge, were exactly similar in natural advantages and conditions. The quantities of butter-fat taken from each were <is follows:—14)11-12 season: Xo. 1 farm 2!.032Pb5; Xo. 2 .farm. 22.43.-); and Xo. ,3. 14,2,3*. lf>]2-13: 24,070, 2(5,070, ano 13.3R4. - Wl3-14: 25.310, 2.i,S!l(i, aim 13.1,38. Surelv this is striking evidence of the ne.vssif'v of herd testing and culling out, and of greater attention to .pastures.
