During the recess Mr. Johnston, of the Haw,era Technical School, was married to Miss I). Chiaholm, of Daunt* virke. Mrs. Brunt (nee Mi9s Crawford), wife of Captain Brunt, who is at the DanUnellcs, left Wellington on Friday last for South Africa. Mr. T. Hill, of Glover Road, haa <&• posed of his residential property to Mr. A. Grant, of Hawera. The Winter Show art union was draw)* | on Saturday evening, and all the prize* went out of Hawera, the £SO nugget being won by Mr. P. Crann. Mr. A. Dunlop, manager of the Hawem Dairy Company, has gone up to the Piako district, where hie valuable advice is being sought in connection with " the building of a factory. The secretary of the Winter Show aasured the directors at a recent meeting that the profits this year were beyond expectations. This is indeed very s&tia* factory in such extraordinary times. It is the intention of the management of the Winter Show to try and make additions to the present building to meat the extra demand for space, as aevcnl intending exhibitors could not get spam and those exhibiting could not obtain aft they; required. Mr. A. G. Bennett, of Manaia, left by the mail for Rotorua on Monday ' morning. Mts. b. C. Bennett, with the assurance of other ladies, ia conducting m jumble sale on Thursday in part of Mr. Hooker's shop, for the purpose of pro-., viding comforts for our boys—a veijt . worthy object. . ... Last week Mr, Hannon, of Auckland; was in Hawera and gave a demonstration of his patent starter or barrier, the principle point being the short ana on the long arm, which is worked by « separate spring and avoids all chance of a horse's head being caught in the tapes. Mr. Hannon hopes to give a demonstration at the coming Hunt Club meeting at New Plymouth.
■Mr. McDowell, of the staff of Bennett and Sutton, received a cable yesterday from his brother at the Dardanelles stating that he was well and had been promoted to sergeant. Messrs Grant and Campbell, land an®' finance agents, Hawera, report that the demand for land this year, notwithstanding the European crisis, compares mom than favorably with previous yean. Several farms have changed hands at prices ranging from £4l to £7l an acre. Town properties have been in good demand, and they report that several have changed hands for cash, a rather unusual thing. Money is inclined to b® a little cheaper in small sums. Among the late lists of wounded men who have now returned to the front appears the name of Corporal C, W. Salwon. D.5.0., of the Field Engineers. Private E. Bates, son of Mr. E. R Hates, IJawera, who went to Egypt with the main body of the New Zealand expeditionary force, and who was among the soldiers invalided iback to the dominion, arrived in Hawera by the express train from Wellington on Saturday evening. There was a huge gathering of citizens at the station to take pail in the public reception to Private Bates, who was accorded an enthusiastic welcome.
