WELCOMING THE WOUNDED. .1 By Telegraph.—Frees Association. Masterton, Last Night. ' Eight wounded soldiers who returned to Yvairarapa on Saturday were given enthusiastic receptions at Carterton and Masterton. Both townships were decorated with flags and bunting. At Masterton rousing speeches were made, and, the men were entertained at lunoheon. Christchureh, Saturday NighV The Willochra, with the southern Motion of the wounded men, arrived at Lyttelton at 3,45 p.m. to-day. The Official reception took place kytteltMU vhert Short presses < oi welcolneVerls' given by the chairman of the Lyttelton Harbor Board, the majors of Lyttelton and Christchureh, the president of the Navy League, and the president of th« Veterans' Association. The men were transferred to a special train, which was, waiting on the wharf, and brought through to Christchureh. There was a. large crowd at Lyttelton to welcome the men buck, and another large gathering at Christchureh railway station. Provision was made for 200 beds in an ambulance train, but only three were required, the patients heing SergeantMajor Keen, Lance-Corporal J. Menzies, and Private K. G. Willis. Keen is suffering from rheumatism, and the other two from wounds.
The following men will stay at Christcliurch hospital to-night:—Sergeant-Major Keen, Corporal Pickering, and Privates Ishcrwood, 1!. 11. Adcock, 11, E, ■ Dudfield, A. J. Xortheote, A. C. Armstrong, K. A. Wheeler, C. Gough, J, Menzies, 'Willis, Thompson, and Walker, 1 whilst Private <■. Herbert will go to a ,'"i private hospital. I J*S Surgeon-Captain Mitchell, medical officer in charge, stated that the conduct . of the men, and particularly of the wound- .'y ed, had been good, and tlicir health hid given little trouble on the voyage. On being asked about the alleged Turkish atrocities he stated "that so far as his 6K-' jt'-'.'jj perieneo went there was not a vestiga ;; - of truth in the rumors. The Turk wag *\' a clean fighter and played the game. ! As for a statement that had been made in regard to explosive bullets having | i Vieco used by the enem.v, Captain Mitchell ridiculed the idea. He wis certaiil they had never been fired. There were, however, he said, some bullets used which, on striking a bone, had expanded), and it was probably this action tbs* caused the rumor.
