Four men, belonging to the "*th Reinforcements, returned to Wellington last night in the steamer Wimmera, having been invalided home. They are Corporal H. I',. Osborne (Apiti). Sapper 'W. The New Zealand Automobile fnioii (Wellington) carried a resolution in favor of a tyre tax through the Customs, instead of a wheel tax, and agreed to support a boycott of German-mado motor goods.

The Haweni Star savs that the old Maori chiefs of Taranak'i. mindful of 'IV Whiti's word that the sword should be buried, are' endeavoring to prevent the young Maoris from joining the expeditionary forces. It is thought that if meetings of Maoris could be held in Taranaki, and the situation explained, a withdrawal of the present opposition might result. The Defence authorities require as many Maoris as they can get, and it is important that ' there should be no misunderstanding. The old Maori chiefs ought to be told what will happen to them should the German barbarians, by any choice, win the day. Addressing the A. and P. Conference on Tuesday, the Rt. Hon. W. F. Mnssey said that he noticed they intended to deal with the' subject of military remounts. Last session they placed on the Statute Book legislation intended to encourage the brf-x(ing of remounts. The supply of horses in New Zealand had been well maintained, but a change had taken place, and in the opinion of the. military authorities very few saddle horses would be required in"future. Artillery horses, light active draughts, were the kind required. It was the duty cf >icw Zealand to encourage the brcedin" of this class, and the Remounts Encouragement Act would be applied for this purpose. He hoped they would be able to subsidise 40 stallions this vear tor light draught or saddle horses." On Wednesday next at Tikorangi Mr. W. Snell's clearing sale will be held.
