A NARROW ESCAPE.

OIL STEAMER ON FIRE. Auckland, Yesterday. A fire was discovered at 11.30 this morning in the Ton-hold of the steamer Caldergrove, which is loaded with case oil from Philadelphia. , The hold was half-full of benzoline, Wit had not fceen worked this morning, though half-an-hour before some of the crew had been working below and the hatch was left open' for ventilation. A little smoke was seen coming out, and tiro leads of the ship's hose were taken down to the hold. The fire brigade was called and the fire was found among a quantity of paper and tow between the outer row of eases and the ship's side, evidently placed there with intent to start a blaze. The fire was extinguished when the ends of nine cases had been charred. Had the blaze progressed much further the ship would probably have been blown up.
