DATES COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN'. Wellington, Yesterday. Mr. Hugo Fried lander, of Ashburt.m, has been reappointed chairman of tile Pates Committee of the New Zealand Racing Conference. ' COUNTRY CLUBS TAXATION.
Wellington, Yesterday. Representatives of country racing clubs in New Zealand interviewed Mr] Herries to-day to protest' against the high taxation on country clubs. Objection was taken to the special taxation of 2J per cent, on the gros3 takings at the meetings, including totalisator receipts, irrespective of whether the clubs made a profit or loss. Clubs did not mind a totalisator tax, but felt that a tax of 2J per cent, imposed on the poss receipts was unjust. They asked that the tax should only be made on profits. Mr. Herries said he agreed that country clubs should be encouraged, anrl he promised to place the deputation's views before Cabinet.
