STRATFORD NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The Midhirst Dairy Company paid out c!o«e on €IB,OOO on Saturday. The Stratford Dairy Company are paying out on the 20th £I4,AOS bonus and £155 for milk received in June. Half _ a dozen beds were supplied by Stratford ladies for the Trentham Hospital Cauip. Saturday' 3 rain did a good deal oi damage to tile roads. The. lake iu Victoria Park was extremely high, and the water flowed across the road in Cordelia street and carried away fences, etc. The head works, that supplies Stratford with water, was also damaged. Part of the drain was carried away, and the debris cfioked the intake, with the result that the town supply was cut off. On Sunday residents were without water. His Worsliip the Mayor and the borough overseer visited the works, and men were put on to clear the obstruction, and the water was again turned on to the town at night. The Whangamomona railway railway suffered considerably. The early morning train arrived alright oil Saturday, but on returning could get no further than Huiroa. Wash-outs were reported between lluiroa and Te AVera, while a fairly large, slip on tTie other side of the Whanga tunnel prevented in any ease the train reaching there. 'Gangs of men were, on Saturday and all day Sunday at work repairing the damage, and it was hoped that through communication would be restored the next night. The sub-committee of the borough council, set up to consider speed limits of motor cars, recommend that the speed limit from Broadway between Celisi and Leyton streets; Kenton street, between Cordelia street and Broadway; Megan street, between Miranda and Juliet street, be not more than 12 miles an hour; on any other street not more than 20 miles; corners not to be turned at a greater speed than six miles an hour; intersection of street not to lie crossed at a greater speed than S miles an hour.
The abbatoir manager reported at Monday night's meeting of the borough council that 4li cows, :i" heifers. 17 oxen, 1 calf. 244 sheen, 2S lambs %nd 04 pigs had been slaughtered during the month of June. Eleven head of stock had been condemned.
The works committee, of the borougfi council have recommended that the old gravel pit be utilised as a rubbish tip in connection with the new sanitary contract.
The Scottish society are still receiving gifts for the auction sale in aid of the sick and wounded fund. Mr. R. MeK. Morrison has donated a pure-bred Jersey bull, Mr. Henderson a Jersey heifer, Wickham Bros, one 3-year Jersey heifer, H. Johnston, a Jersey cow, Mr. Sid Pitt, a 3-year ohl heifer. Mr. A.
