Waterworks.— The watermains have he; n lowered in St. Aubyn street at ("utficld .road, and at Queen street, and in Devon street at Mt. Edgecombe street. The automatic flood gates and floats are fixed in position and are now connected up by the steel rope. Building and drainage.— Kight permits (building) have been issued, rel>reKcnt.iiiK a total cost of €3275. Five drainage permits have been issued. BOROUCH FOREMAN'S REPORT. Streets and Footpaths.—On account of the abnormally wet weather during the past month and the extraordinary heavy traffic carting metal for the trams and streets has caused most of the streets in the borough to break an, which has kept the whole of the maintenance stall' busy patching streets and screening - footpaths to keep"the strokes and footpaths passable. ELKCTKICAL EXiUNEER. Mr, JI. Black report* that the maximum load rmii'dwl at, the powerhouse during the past month was 372 kiloivats, 32 more than the previous month, and an increase, of 2!l kilowats over the corresponding month of last year. Dur- I ing the quarter 5S new connections have been added, making a total of 1541). Owing to the weather being so wet during most of the month we were unable to get the wires for the new transmission line run. Several of the large transformers recently received have been erected to take lee jila. e of others which were too small for the steadily increasing load. Plans of the new (itiO volt substation switchboard are now to hand. The material was expected to be shipped early this month, but we have no advice yet of actual shipment. The meters authorised last month have been received and some of them put into service. Advice has been received that the meters covered by the larger indent order are arriving shortly. TRAMWAYS. Mr. F. Black, consulting engineer, reports: Contract No. 1. —No progress has been been made on the wiring of the car shed during the month owing to the difficulty experienced in getting insulated wire of the particular grade specified. This grade is of a slightly higher quality than that used in this country for the usual class of work, and was' only specified by me because of the practice which your borough electrical engineer has adopted of using this grade for all council buildings. I understand that the contractors are endeavoring to obtain the required grade from Australia. If it cannot be obtained there, I propose to allow the use of the grade which is in general use in this country and to deduct from the contract amount the Blight difference in value thereof. Contract No. 2.—The track laying work lias during the month proceeded along South Road through St. Aubyn street to within a few yards of the corner of Egnwmt street, and includes the siding opposite railway station, also from point of original commencement along Moturoa road for a distance of 33 chains, and from Devon street terminus (at Morley street corner) eastwards for 23.! chains. The month's work includes Si! chains of track excavation and 102 chains of track metalled, making a total, since commencement. <T chains excavated and 201) metalled. The tracks in oar shed have been ptil down and are ready for the concrete flooring to he put in.
