THE ETHICS OF GAMBLING.
ADDRESS TO THE BROTHERHOOD. At the meeting of the Brotherhood on Sunday afternoon the chair wits taken by Mr. K. ('. Hughes and nil address .was given by Mr. G. W, Dolby on "The Ethics of Gambling." The speaker began by defining gambling as the act of exchanging something small but certain for something large but uncertain, and dealt first with betting on the racecourse. He pointed out that tnen were led to bet by the desire for excitement, and, secondly, in order to win money. The evil of betting was that it caused men to desire to acquire money without having earned'it. Capitalists were often accused of exploiting the public, that is securing for themselves money they had not earned, and men who betted committed exactly tho same fault, which was due to covetotisness. While it could not be said that it was wrong to make an occasional small bet. the habit of betting was really a serious evil.
