GOLF.

NEWS FEOM NEAR AND FAR. Stratford beat Inglewood, at Inglewood, on Thursday. The Tarahua club will play return matches with Inglewood, Waitara, and Witiora, at Tarahua, during the next few weeks, but dates liavc not yet been fixed.

The St. Andrew's Cross match, postponed by the New Plymouth club last Saturday, will be played to-day. The teams match originally set down for today will bo played on August 7th. It appears the handicaps fixed for members of the Witiora Club are based on the scratch player with two strokes more than is allowed under the standardisation system. The New Plymouth club has written to Witiora on the matter and no doubt the error will be rectified.

The match in aid of the Wounded Soldiers' Fund for prizes presented by Mr Hasell will be played on the New Plymouth club's links nexFThursday. The match is open to all Taranaki golfers with a standard handicap, and it is hoped there will be a large number of entries.

Mixed foursomes will be played at WitioTa on July 15. On the 22nd a match will be played against Inglewood at Inglewood, and on the 24th and the 2!) th the third round of the Medley Cup will be played for Saturday and Thursday players respectively.

Next Thursday week the New Plymouth club will send a men's team to Inglewood. This is the last inter-club match that has been arranged by the New Plymouth club, but it is probable a match will be arranged with Stratford later in the season.

Tlie semi-finals in the Weston Cuo, played for by the ladies of the New Plymouth Club, have resulted as follows: Miss Brewster (11) defeated Mrs Walker (40), 5 up and 3 ; Miss M. Free (28) defeated Mrs Ilutton (25), 4 and 2. The final will probably be played on Tuesday.

The scheme of tree planting on the Xew Plymouth club's links has been completed, over fifty trees having been planted. A welcome improvement is to be made at the twelfth hole. The rushes on the left are to be cut so as 10 minimise the chance of losing balls in this locality, which is very popular with most players, but the clearing will not be so comprehensive as to make the hole any easier.

The Xew Plymouth club's programme? for the remainder of the season is as toilows -. To-day, St Andrew's Cross ; July 10th, medal handicap—flag match ; July 17th, mixed foursomes; July 24tli'. St Andrew's Cross; July 31st, foursomes (seniors and juniors to play to gether) ; August 7th, teams' match ; August 1-ltli, championship—qualifying toiind (lt> (pialify) ; August 21, <\u.] Ist round ; August 2Slh, do., 2nd round : September 4tli, do., .'lid round ; September lltli, do., final (30 holes) ; September lSth, four-ball bogey ; September, 25th, St. Andrew's Crews ; October 2nd, bogey handicap ; October !)t!i, mixed foursomes.
