GERMAN ATTACKS REPULSED. VIOLENT FIGHTING NEAR ARRAS. Received July 2, 10 p.m. Paris, July 2. German activity at Argonne indicated an attempt to reach the Chalons-Verdun railway near St, Mcnehould, in order to threaten Verdun from the west. The enemy made several unsuccessful attempts to penetrate southwards by the Biesme Valley. Official: There was a ver" violent cannonade north of Arras. One of our mines on the front at Danpierre wrecked the enemy's defensive works. Two enemy attacks in the Vosges, on the Langen Felhkiffilgens front, were completely repulsed.
GERMAN ATTACK CHECKED. A DUEL IN THE AIR. Paris, July 1. A communique states:—The German attack in the Argonne yesterday was particularly, violent, and it is estimated that two divisions were engaged in the attack. We checked another violent attack at Metzeral, and also completely checked the Germans, who sustained important losses. A sensational aerial duel took place at a height of 2000 ft. French airmen out-manoeuvred a German, whose machine burst into flames and fell. Both the occupants were killed.
