Dominion Show.
'PKOI'LK'S DAY. A liAKfiK -ATTKX DAM UK. Tin' Dominion Show at Umvera yesterday was greeted with unfavorable weather for People's Day, yet, despite that fact, tlieru was a large attendance of settlers from the surrounding distriets, and these, with t'lie .inilux by special trains from both north and south, <aiised tlie pathways at times to be so congested tiiat loeoination was dillieult. It was, however. a goodhumored erowil, and what jostling there was was taken in good part. 'l'he crowd was not confined to any particular section of the show, but the agricultural hall, the dairy 'hall, the trade hall, the machinery hall, poultry, dogs and sideshow all had their devotees. The display liv the Agricultural Department found general praise, visitors being surprised at its magnitude and comprehensiveness. It attracted a great crowd of fanners, who devoted most of the day between it and the machinery hall, where there is a record number of milking machines in operation. Milking by mechanical means is becoming more and more compulsory with farmers, as the dilliculty of labor becomes more acute and consequently the merits and demerits of the various machines came in for careful consideration and deliberation, with a view to future installation —fo■■ the Taranaki farmer never takes a step in the dark. Tradesmen's dis■plavs' found favorable criticism. The ladies had much to interest them in the home industry and fancy work sections.
Tile arrangements of the show again found favorable f omment. A Mew Plymouth man. who has attended shows throughout New Zealand and Australia, complimented the officials on the completeness and attention given to every detail. Tn fact, he had not seen better nnvwliere. 'Mr. L. 0. Hooker, the organiser, kept a controlling eve on everything, whilst the secretary. Mr. 11. A. Lennon, had his department working smoothie, and the thousand and one little th'ings. the neglect of any one of which would cause confusion, were 'all prearranged. 'MY. D. •!, Hoodwin, the president, was always handy, and was ably assisted by the committee, and in this connection we must rectify the omission of the name of Mr. A. If. -Oouroy. who was a member, and whose valuable experience was always at tlie committee's disposal.
The tea rooms, which were run by the society, were ably managed by Airs. K. Hutchinson, who, with her energetic stall" of young ladies, hail a busy time coping with the large crowd, and the only fault that, Could be found was the room was all too small. The committee hopes to rectify this, however. Inadding an extra story at the back of the building before next show. This will enable it to give more room to the growing needs of blip machinery, dairy and other classes. At present there is not a foot of room to spare anywhere, and if more room was available more side shows could have been accommodated. These all appeared to do good business yesterday, POULTRY. The poultry section was an attractive one, the entries being much more numerous than in previous years, but the accommodation provided proved ample. The display included some very line birds. There was also a fair number of ducks.
'ln conversation with one of the judges, 11 News representative learnt that there was, however, a falling oil' in both <j;iality and numbers in some classes, while others were decidedly above the average. The judge stated t'hat tile T-loudans were ft nice elass, being indeed much bettor than usual, hut tin* bhu'k Orpingtons Were not so good. The golden Wyandotte* were a poor lot,, hut on the other hand there was an exceptionally nice lot of silver pullets, the three lirst plated birds being quite equal to anything pelllied this season. There, were also several very good white Wyandottes, and the winning Partridge bird was really an exceptionally good one. The North Island championship for Rocks drmv a large entry, especially in white Kocks, and competition in this e lfsß lvas vcrV keen. Although some good liyeksi hail been penned in previous years, the quality this season showed considerable improvement, the winner in each elass bein? particularly good. The Knglisli white Leghorns Verc rather poor, but some jiiee brown o "e.s were exhibited in the hen and pullet classes. The Minorcas were only fair. What was almost a rarity, a iihic!; llnuiliiirg pullet. penned. Perhaps the strongest class in the show whs the American white Leghorns, the cockerel and pullet elasses being exceptionally strong. The utility (dasses were also strong, and some vcrv line Indian Runner ducks were penned. r| ""' i<r ling trios also included some good pens.
