SUBMARINE OFF CONSTANTINOPLE. VISIT ALARMS THE PEQIPLE. SINKING OF THE TRANSPORTS. STOIiY OF BUiIJ.I'iXT DEEDS. Received June 20, 1.20 a.m. London, June 28. A resident of Constantinople, tlcscribing the visit of submarine Ell, says: Suddenly, like a. razor blade, the submarine shot into the harbor, and the people began running hither and thither. .Soldiers on transports fired rifles into the water, and others jumped into the sea. The submarine, with a wide sweep, passed behind the transport Stamboul, whose rre\v jumped overboard. Two shore batteries opened ifire and the first shot struck the transport Stamboul, and the second hit a steamer with, wounded outside Eeraglio Point. The submarine . allowed the transport with wounded to proceed, but torpedoed the others. A member of the crew of Ell says: We humped around the »Sea of Marmora for a few days without sighting anything, until 'Sunday morning, when outside Constantinople, we saw a big gunboat, and gave her " tin fish." She sank in five minutes. As she keeled over she opened fire and hit our periscope. We sighted a steamer on .Monday and stopped her. A Yankee correspondent aboard tried to bluff us. but we examined her, and found a. six-inch gun, several gun mountings, and a qnantitv of heavy gun ammunition on board. So ivc blew her up. After torpedoing two others, we, entered Constantinople on Tuesday, and fired two torpedoes. One sank a transport and tbe other exploded ashore. On our return, after passing The Xarrows.'we rose to the surface and found a mine hanging over our 'boats. We chucked it off smartly.
