The Daily News. MONDAY, JUNE 28, 1915. THE TARANAKI FARMERS' FREEZING WORKS.
We are constrained once more to cmphasise the urgent need for an immediate impetus to be given to the taking up of more shares in the Taranaki producers' freezing works. The project, being one that must be of such great advantage to the farmers and business people of the' province, ought not to need any advocacy, 'but the necessity for having a sufficiency of capital wherewith to commence operations, so that they may proceed to fruition, is of paramount importance. The minimum of shares fixed as a sine qua non 'before formation of the company was reached, with a margin to spare, but, as frequently happens, all the promises have not been made good, and time presses, for it is imperative that, if -the works a rc to lie erected in time for the coming season, tenders should be tailed at once. There must be a great number of settlers and business men in the district who could easily take up shares, and probably would do so if approached in the right way. It is settled beyond all doubt that the produce -will be shipped from New (Plymouth, and that the works will be erected in the vicinity of the town, so as to be handy for receiving stock and shipping the frozen produce, thus securing economy in working. When it is Considered what large benefits will accrue from the completion of the harbor works, and the advent of the oceangoing vessels with inward cargo and taking away our exports, it will be evident that the moat freezing works will be an important factor in the success of the port, as -well as of the province. This is not a local matter in any way, for the whole of Taranaki must participate in the advantages secured. Surely, then, it is only natural to expect that a liberal measure of finan. cial support sliould be given to one of the chief factors in inducing the Home boats to make Xcw Plymouth a regular port of call—the freezing works. We strongly urge that a further canvas should be made for subscribers to the share list, s 0 as to place the finances of the company on a satisfactory footing; also that those who hare already promised their support, but have not rnarlo good, should do so promptly. Success in this direction will, in all probability, induce present holders to increase the number of their shares. Particularly would we urge the business people to regard the project as a most important factor in increasing the volume of trade. It has been a constant subject of regret that there have been so few industries in our midst to ff'vo an impetus to trade. Here is one ready to hand, needing only a moderate capital, and the opportunity sliould be eagerly embraced if the district i, to Progress as it should do. The main point, however, is that immediate action must be taken. Business men and settlers ought not to wait to be asked to take up shares; they should do so spontaneously on sound business principles Taranaki-its towns and rural districts -has prospered beyond the most sanguine expectations, hut it will do so far more if the residents will show the proper progressive spirit, and come forward to assist in the establishment of an industry that will assure the producers and the business men largely increased profits. The matter requires no thought —only action, and that at once.
