STRATFORD NEWS.
(From 'Our Own Correspondent.) The Te Wera police station has been closed and the constable in charge, has been transferred to Stratford. The Stratford Fire Brigade stayed the pantomime "Cinderella'' on Thursday and Friday ' night. The proceeds were in aid of purchasing a motor tiro engine for the brigade, and they were rewarded with a very fair house, on botli occasions. The "panto." was certainly a credit to those who took partin it. I understand the brigade intend staging the pantomime at Eltham very shortly, when the Eltham folic are promised a treat. v Mr. A. D. Stanley has been appointed secretary to the A. and I'. Association. At a meeting of the A. and V. Association, the following gentlemen were elected members of the general committee:—Messrs A. A. Piper, W. B. Fearon, W. H. Were, I. B. Richards, F. Styles, J. T. Belcher, If. Mellow, A. Walter, T. Perry, W. T. Bailey, T. Kirkwood, S. M. l'orritt, Kobinson, W. H. Young, A. C. Bell, T. Oodski, R. Binnie, F. E. Dobson, W. Scato, and A. C. Walshe. The Scottish Society are holding a g:ft auction sale in the Strafford sale yards en July 2(1. The same night the society are holding a grand concert and. dance in the Town Hall, the whole proceeds to go to the sick and wounded fund. Already they have received numbers of promises of stock, etc 'Three local gentlemen have promised the soei* ety £IOO each providing seven others will dq the same. No doubt there are farmers and others in this district who could easily give this amount without it in any way affecting thorn, and it is to be hop<d they will come forward and help to swell the funds for this most deserving object. The society will be pleased to receive gifts of stock, poultry, or anything that will help the fund, from the well-wishers and their kinsmen residing in Taranaki. The Midhirst Town Hall Board he'd a most successful concert on Thursday night in aid of the wounded soldiers' fund. Well over £3O was taken for the fund. The weather for the last three weeks has been something awful —raining every day. The streets and footpaths are breaking up daily, and will need a lot of patching by the borough staff. The Toko settlers held a most successful patriotic concert 'at Toko on Thursday night. The Belgian flag presented by Miss Matson, of Hawera, and which was sold here on Saturday week last, and brought £450. was again donated by Mr, Bayley, and over £l5O was realised for it, the purchaser again being Mr. Bayley. Close on £2OO is expected to be netted by the Toko settlers efforts. Mr. Bayley has generously donated the Belgian flag to the' Scottish Society to be sold by auction at their , function on July 20.
