The Paten. Borough Band held its annual meeting on Honda v last. In comnioii with other hands in the dominion, he local hand is suffering through the loss of players. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £8 fis, and it only behoves the present players to' keep together; for once a hand goes down, it is an uphill task to reorganise. Perhaps a little inore enthusiasm on the part of a few members would work- volumes in keeping the band up to average strength. .. °
The movement to form a club lien; lias been taken up with much enthusiasm, and the promoters are on the lookout for a suitable building. They are negotiating with tiie Borough Council for the use of the Library Buildings, but so far nothing has been definitely decided. The Library is in the wrong place; provision should have been made in the Town Hall for such a necessary institution. Xo doubt the present building is not an acquisition to the town, If the council could find less dismal surroundings, and better appointments, the present building, renovated throughout, would suit the purposes of a club admirably. Failing this, more enthusiasm should'be aroused in procuring subscribers and bringing the Library more up to date and in keeping with 'the progress of the town. This question will have to be tackled, and what more opportune time is there than the present? In the meantime, one can only hope that every inducement will he given to the newly formed club, and that it will be the means "that men should draw a little closer to one another." The' Patea Rifle Club held its annual meeting last Friday, the report showing that the past season was a record one for the club. In addition to the usual tourneys, and association meeting was held, which -was successful in every way.! The club finished up with a credit balance of £3!) 15s Sd for the year. For the coming season it is proposed to hold a two-day association meeting. The incoming committee was empowered to build a suitable shelter shed, on the I range. At the meeting, twenty-six valuable trophies were distributed to the successful shots. Patea has been successful in retaining the Taranaki Championship Shield, although several clubs have striven 'hard to annex this coveted trophy. The retiring secretary, Mr. J. .1. Denipscv, was presented with a cheque for his valuable services during the season. Two of the members, Eiflemen <T. Dcmpsey and T. Johnson, have enlisted for active service. After the i meeting, a couple of hours were spent] in song and story, and in honoring the I usual toasts.
