The High Commissioner reports under date London, June 22 (5.50 a.m.): The Times says Lemberg lias not yet fallen, and though the Grodek line has been evacuated the Russians are making another stand nearer the city, but it is assumed in Petrograd that 'it will not be held.
THE BURDEN OF RUSSIA. BREAKING THE GERMAN WAVE. WHEN RUSSIANS WILL ADVANCE. (Times and Sydney Sun Services.) Received June 22, 5.40 p.m. London, June 21. The Times correspondent at Warsaw says General Alexieif, who commands a force twice the size of the British and French armies, and who is credited with the keenest brain in the Kussian field armies, maintains the opinion that Russia can stand losses almost indefinitely, and is willing to accept the burden of breaking the German wave until the Germans have.reached the limit of thenstrength. When that time arrives the Russian advance will begin.
FINE RUSSIAN CHARGE. GERMAN ATTACKERS DISPERSED. Petrograd, June 21. • Official: Details of the fighting at Lubaczow show that a crisis was reached when the Germans succeeded in breaking our line to the west of Lubaczow, advancing rapidly northwards. Our infantry, which has spent four days in arduous fighting, was exhausted, and General Volodchcnko ordered the Clicrnigoff Hussars, the Don Cossacks, ana Kinburn Dragoons to charge. The Germans fled panic-stricken all along the line. We pursued till the German reserves took up a new front. Wc lost 200 killed and wounded, but stopped the development of the enemy's success. Amsterdam, June 21. The Kaiser was present at the battle of Grodek. THE RIOTS AT MOSCOW. DAMAGE AMOUNTING TO £4,000,000. Received June 23, 12.40 a.m. London, June 22. Petrograd reports that the recent anti-German riots resulted in £4,000,000 damage. Nearly five hundred stores and factories and two hundred private buildings were wrecked by rioters, who recklessly pillaged and destroyed thein by fire.
ENEMY OFFENSIVE CONTINUES. RUSSIANS RETIRE ON LEMBERG. Received June 23, 1.40 a.m. Petrograd, June 22. Official: The enemy offensive in the Rawa Kusska region continues. We retired on Saturday night from the Grodek Lakes on Lemberg. LEMBERG. THE KEY OF 'GALICIA. Importance gathers around the operations in the neighborhood of Lemberg. A few days ago tne Grand Duke Nicholas was reported in a German'message to have said that lie would defend Lemberg to tlie last, and then we published a message reporting that the London Times says it is assumed in Petrograd that Lemuerg will not be held. Lemberg is the key to almost the whole oi the Russian bold on Galicia. If it fails, at least t\vo-t:iirds of the invaded area must be given up. The transfer 'of the whole of the communication and transport traffic to the smaller railway systems radiating from Tarnapol and Czortkofj in the extreme east oi Galicia, .already carrying a good share of the work, will not improve the Russians' position on the Dneister. The enemy's udvance guards have attempted to pierce through the gaps between the small lakes among which Grodek stands. These lakes form a s ; iort chain running north and south, about 15 miles west of Lemberg; and the barrier is continued north and south by the stream connecting them and running into the Dneister. Lemberg seems to be fated to be ruled by a pariety of masters. In the Polish campaign against the Turks in 1072 Koperile, the Turkish 'General, backed by a powerful army, captured Lemberg on September 9th, but in 1075 General Sobieski, who then led the Poles and Russians, gained one of the most lirilliant victories of the age over the Turks at Lemberg'. In the following year peace was concluded, by which Turkey retained Lemberg. Subsequently Lemberg came under Austrian dominion. Early in the present war the Russians directed an advance towards Lemberg, and on September 3 of last year the Russians entered the town, and now, after Russian occupation for some nine months, the Austro-Gcrnian forces are perilously near to Lemberg again. Lemberg is the capital of the crown land of Galicia, Austria, and lies -JfiS miles north-west of Vienna by rail. It has a population of 200,000, which is very mixed in character, II per cent, being .lews, 70 per cent. Poles, 10 per cent. Germans, and most of the remainder llutheninns. Lemberg is the fourth city of the Austrian Empire, coining afier"Yienna, Prague, mid Trieste. The fortifications of the town were transferred into pleasure grounds in 1811.
