The. headmistress, ifrss Hodges, reported as follows:—The Girls' High School reopened for the second term's worl: on Tuesday. June 1. 'ln the senior department two new pupils were enrolled and four in the. junior department, making the totals (57 and 14 respectively. Eleven were paving tuition fees. One of the free-place pupils was still absent through illness. The Premier had visited the school, and lie addressed the girls. GEXEEIAL. The New Zealand Society of Accountants wrote, enclosing two guineas to be awarded as prizes for the senior and junior ibookkenping classes, the prizes to be awarded iby the principal. The society expressed its interest ill the boys and hoped they would realise the practical value of bookkeeping.—On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr, Eraser, a vote of thanks was passed to the. society. Tne secretary reported that the headmaster Had stated that he was running short of chemicals, the transport of which from the Old Country was apparently delayed.-—lt was decided to send a cablegram for information before securing colonial chemicals. The secretary stated that the finan: cial statement, was much as he. anticipated. Their expenses were less, tile term being a short one, —The chairman 6*id their financial position was about the -iinne as usual. : ETh« chairman referred to the football tournament, between the school and PalmerstoH and Napier schools, and it was decided to write to the headmaster in this connection. The gardener at the school applied for an increase in wages. The chairman pointed out that the man was getting ;Cl2(> per year or .£lO per month. After some -dita ussion. it was decided to pay the man !>s per day. The Education Department notified the board that the suggested now scheme of control would be held over for consideration by the Education Council. The board went into committee to discuss the principal's salary, and decided to increase this by £1(10. The chairman and Mr. Kvving were appointed to confer with the architect with regard to the extensions to the Hoys' High School in brick or eonerete. Accounts amounting to Cfi-12 10s were passed for payment.
