ASSISTING THE BELGIANS.
KOKU'S CONTffiIBUTIOX. ! Settle'i'3 of Koru arc to be icongratu'lated 0 n the success tliat attended their efforts on Thursday night at the gift | sale and social that was held in aid 'of the Belgians. The settlers of the ' district had worked hard witli one aim 1 • namely, to assist the fund to the utmost of their a'bility, and that they were able to raise over £~S from a comparatively small district on such a night as ihursday is sufficient commendation' on the nay the committee lias worked and also the support received from residents of the district. There were two committees, a gentlemen's committee and, a. ladies' committee, and each worked hard in its respective departments, canvassing the district thoroughly in search of contributions, which were given in cash or kind freely and cheerfully. N&v Plymouth also contributed its quota as the result of a canvass liy some of the energetic committee. The result was that a miscellaneous assortment was l submitted for sale by the auctioneer, .Mr. 0. Fail-brother, who was kept very busy knocking goods or stock down for a couple of hours, and the secretary, Mr. H. J. Englefield, who proved the' right man in the right place, had a busier timebooking up and taking cash. THE SOCIAL. The hall was crowded for the social, excellent music for which was provided by Mr. A. Good (piano) and Mr. Morris (violin). Messrs. W. Mace and '.J. Reid kept mutters merrily moving jn their capacity' as masters of ceremonies, pongs by Mr. D, Paterson and recitations by Messrs. P. Raill and Englefield provided .pleasant variety. A bright interlude was the supper, provided by the ladies of tho district and dispensed by the Ladies'' Committee. Mr. P. Eaill, V»ho, as chairman, kept matters very much alive, made an appropriate speech. He considered that the Belgians were very deserving of support, as it was impossible to estimate what we owed t 0 their gallant stand. lie thanked residents for their generous response, and said that he felt sure they would respond just as generously when called upon, as they would be shortly, to assist the fund for their own wounded. "(Applause.) He stated that in the latter case it might possibly be advisaJble to co-operate with Oakura. THE SALE.
