We drove them back, I inflicting great losses, and took two thousand prisoners in one village. THE RUSSIAN DEFENCES. ■. AUSTRIAN OFFICIAL REPORT. Received June 21, 11.15 p.m. Amsterdam, June 21. An Austrian communique says: We gained a fresh and complete victory. The Russians have collected the remnants of their defeated armies for a defence of Lemberg. General Ermoli, following General Mackensen's victory, stormed the Russian positions on both sides of the Lemberg road and entered the enemy's main positions. Everywhere the Russians are now retreating on the entire front towards Lemberg. We captured a thousand prisoners and much material. WHY LEMBERG IS PRIZED. BRILLIANT RUSSIAN ATTACK. London, June 20. The Observer's Petrograd correspondent says the object of the Lemberg attack is to impress Roumania and Bulgaria. The German staff regard the position on the Gallipoli Peninsula as a stalemate, neither side being able to use more men within the space. The only danger is if Roumania or Bulgaria intervene. Petrograd, June 20. The battle at Lubackzow on the 15th included a brilliant and bold attack by cavalry upon infantry, in which the whole of the 91st German Regiment was annihilated or dispersed. The attack produced a panic, which temporarily stopped the German advance. The enemy's vanguard attempted to break through the defiles to Grodek Lake, but were repulsed. The fighting continues. Considerable enemy forces crossed the Dneister below Liziow, but all attempts to advance beyond the >teen luniks on the 17th and 1 Sth were r. pu! -ed.
