THE BUDGET. ; "A TERRIFIC INSTRUMENT." London, Juno 18. The Times Parliamentary correspond-' ent says that 3lr. Mt-Kenna's first budget, which promises to be the most terrific instrument in our fiscal history, will probably include a surtax on war •profits and an increase of the income tax such as was not dreamt of a year' ago. TRADE WITH THE ENEMY. ( GLASGOW FIRM PUNISHED. London, June IS. In the iron ore case a majority of 'the jury found the prisoners guilty, with a recommendation of leniency, owing to the unprecedented circumstances and violent derangement of 'mi iness mowing to the war. Prisoners were sentenced to six months' imprisonment and fined £2OOO each. Their correct name is Hetherington, not Irvingdalc. MR. LLOYD GEORGE'S TASK. *' Received June 20, 3.50 p.m. , London, June 19. Mr. Lloyd George's power, officially defined, is to organise the sources of supply and the labor available to supply taunitions, of which the supply'is wholly or partly undertaken by the transfer to him as may be agreed with the department or authority concerned in the functions in the matter of general ordnance, or those connected with Woolwich, other Government arsenals, or small arms factories. A DECREASE IN WHISKY. Received June 20, 4 p.m. London, June in. The production of Scotch malt whisky 'has decreased by a million gallons for iho season. ELECTIONS AT HOME UNLIKELY. Received June 20, 3.50 p.m. London, June 19. The Government is in favor of the present Parliament being extended for a year, and holding no municipal elections in November. TsRITISH CASUALTIES. Received June 20, 3.5(5 p.m. London, June 10. Casualty lists published to-day show -eighty-one officers and 2576 men in both services. In the fifth battalion of South Lancashires forty-six were" killed; 2nd Northumberland Fusiliers, 21 killed and 267 missing; 2nd South Staffordshiivs, 189 wounded; 2nd Royal Lancaster.?, 405 missing and 119 missing reported to be prisoners. OTHER WAR ITEMS. London, June 18. The Archbishop.of York's committee,; Which the alleged increase in illegitimacy owing to the war, reports that the minors are without foundation, though there has been much giddiness and excitability among young girls and there'is grave' cause for anxiety on account of the prevailing low moral standard. It is anticipated that the r.c-.v War lLoan Bill will be introduced on Monday. The cotton operatives accepted arbitration without stoppape.
