TTIT? SUGAR SHORTAGE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Nelson, June 17. Seen to-day regarding the statement made by the' Auckland manager of the Colonial Sugar Refinery Company in replying tu the telegraphed statement tli.it the K. Jam Factory have to close down for a period owing to being unable to secure the necessary supplies of sugar, Mr. Kirkpatriek said that (he manager's remarks, as telegraphed, were very unfair to his firm, and some reply was necessary. For instance, it was stated that the company was unable to supply companies for speculative purposes. This implies that the firm had supplies upon which it intended to profit in same way. This is absolutely incorrect. All the iirm desired was enough sugar to keep the works going. Further hj« had oli'ered to pay an increased pree for sugar if he could be supplied, simply to save closing down the works and inflicting hardship on the workers. LEVIN CARNIVAL. Levin, June 17. The taking's at yesterday's carnival amounted to £320, and many amounts have to be made up yet, The above amount, with £llOO previously raised, brings tho Levin contribution carnival j funds to over £I4OO. PONGAROA STABLKS BURNED. Pahiatua, June 17. A fire at Pongaroa this morning destroyed Powell's, dentist, and the Pahi-atua-Pongaroa coaching stables. The horses were saved, but some harness and one coach were burnt.
