Melbourne, June 17. The Victorian High Court declared that the Federal land tax was valid. The main point involved was whether the Federal Government had power lo levy such taxation on State property. SCIENCE- CONGKKSS POSTPONED. Sydney. June 17. Owing to the war the meeting of the Australasian Science Congress, fixed for llotiart in January next, has been postponed till 1017. COURSING CONFERENCE. Sydney, June 17. The Inter-State Coursing Council and a committee were appointed to draft a scheme. The main objects are to secure uniformity of rules, to keep a national registrar of greyhounds, and to establish an Australian Cup to replace the present Waterloo Cup. DRINK STATISTICS. Sydney, June 17. Canon Bovee, dealing with the drink statistics, shows that the drink expenditure per head of population was ,CJ :Js Sd, an increase of lis (Id, making .the increase per head during the past five \e.irs «s 0.1. lie attributes this to Hie wave of prosperity which has so greatly eehi"..-0,l (he'spending power, and the shorter hours, which all'onled workers more spare time. The biggest increases are in colonial beer and sparkling wines. He points out the baneful effects of drinking on the war, and earnestly stresses the need for drastic restrictions si,eilar to those „ilii-r cavalries have adopted.
