B. Markham (Liberal) in the House of Commons said that if Mr, Asquith's Newcastle statement that there had been no shortage of munitions was made on the highest authority he could only have been referring to Lord Kitchener. For months after the war began fEe War Office took no steps to organise the production of munitions. {The Government ought to inform the House whether the Master-General of Ordnance or Lord Kitchener was responsible. A captain who had returned from the front, in a speech to the North wick Unionist Association, stated that thousands had been killed through lack of ammunition. The offii t had been severely reprimanded by Lord Kitchener and not allowed to rejoin liis regiment, yet military members of Parliament were allowed to make similar speeches in the House of Commons •without being censured. TRADE WITH THE ENEMY. ENGLISH FIRM ON TRIAL. Received June 17. 11.35 p.m. London, June 17. An accountant gave evidence that Jacks appeared to he merely a selling agent for a Nova Scotia company. The defendant Wilson gave evidence that his firm acted solely as agents for a Nova Scotia company. The firm had an eighteenth share of the company's capital. The firm had nothing to do with the cargo when it reached Rotterdam, and had striven to stop the vessel proceed- ! ing there, believing every effort should > be made to prevent the ore reaching Germany.
