LABOR REPORT.

NEW PLYMOUTH. Trade and labor conditions are satisfactory. The building trade is still busy in all branches, and all skilled! workers are engaged. With the work now in hand, together with some contracts that are about to come out, there is a fair prospect that this trade will continue busy throughout the winter. Retailers and tradesmen express satisfaction with the turnover during the period, which is quite up to tlio average. Draper)' and clothing trades, however, are suffering somewhat on account of the difficulty in getting the right class of goods from Home manufacturers. The dairying season is about ended, and has been very satisfactory, the weather conditions experienced during the pa-si month auguring well for the quantity of feed, and fanners arfi looking forward to a record season next summer. Milkers are already being engaged. Tho unskilled labor market is quiet, but there have been very few callers during the month in search of work. BUILDING TRADES.

Bricklaying: Has been quiet for soma considerable time, and there is little pftspect of an improvement. Carpentry and joinery: Busy; all tradesmen are fully employed. Painting: A fair amount of work is still offering, and there are 110 men out of work.

Plastering: l ? air. Plumbing and gasfitting: Busy, but shows a slight tendency of falling off. Stonemasonry: Has been busy during the period, and all hands were employed. This, however, has been caused through alterations being made to one large stone building, and is not likely to continue. WOOD-WORKING TRADES. Boxmaking: Shows a falling off owiny to the end of the dairy factory season approaching. Cabinet-making and upholstering: Fair. Coopering: Busy. Sash and door factories: Normal. Sawmilling, wood-turning, etc.: Show a slight improvement, and are now con«idered satisfactory. ENGINEERING TRADES. Electrical engineering: Busy. Fitting and turning and iron and brass moulding: Steady business is ruling in all branches, but not quite equal to that of last period. LEATHER TRADES. Bootmaking: Factories continue 'busy with full work for all hands. Repair, shops are busy. Saddlery and harness making: Fair; all hands are employed. CLOTHING TRADES. Dressmaking and millinery: Busy; all hands are employed, and some overtime is being worked. Shirt-making: Busy, and employment could be found for one or two hands. Tailoring . (order): Fair; quite up to the average for this season of the year. RETAIL TRADES. Clothing, boots, and drapery: Good average business has obtained. Groceries: Normal, with a fair cash business being done. Printing trades: Satisfactory. MEAT-FREEZING, Etc. Tanning, currying, and fellmongeriii"Fair. Slaughtering, freezing, and preserving: Busy, but the output is not what it should be in consequence of the difficulty in getting shipping accommodation. COACHBUILDING TRADES. Blacksmithing: Busy. Coach and carriage'building: Fair. Cycle and motor trades: Busy in the repair branch. AGRICULTURAL OPERATIONS. I'arming, dairying, etc.: Tho dairying industry is about to close for the 'sea"•n. Ihe weather has been excellent, and most of tho ploughing is well i,i !i:ind. _ In most parts of the district there is a good supply of winter feed l'-r stock. miscellaneous. Ironmongering: Continues fairly busv. Tent and tarpaulin making: Good Brewing: Good. Brickmaking: Quiet. Unskilled labor: The tramway construction work is now in full operation, and a large number of unskilled workers are employed on these and other works.
