RIFLE SHOOTING.
PATEA v. MERE MERE. The Patea Rifle Club were again called on to defend the Taranaki Rifle Club's Championship Shield on Saturday la»t, the challengers being the Mere Jli-iv Rifle Club, who were defeated by 17 points. Unfortunately the rain, wliidi had been threatening all the morning;, came down steadily in the afternoon, and spoilt the shooting. Rifleman IX. Willis and E. Thompson were top scorers for the local team with 92 each, (I. Thorbum being at the head of the Hit for the visitors with a score of 91.
